More anecdotal evidence that Australia ins't the diner's paradise despite the use of a mandatory service charge and higher hourly wages than much of the US: http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/08/05/104975_gold-coast-top-story.html As always, the reader should take this with a grain of salt. |

Mr Donovan said the job of waiting staff should be to enhance the customer's experience not just dish out the plates. Guess he never met people like Paid-up....8p |

I'm not surprised at all by this article. The Gold Coast is a pretty tacky (in my opinion) tourist area, and the level of restaurants isn't high. A lot of the staff are itinerant workers who have no intention of making a career in the service industry. There would be very little repeat business, so most owners wouldn't have much incentive to hire quality staff. I think in this type of setting the removal of a basic wage and working only for tips would improve service, but as I'm sure you're aware, Australians aren't great tippers so it could be a lose / lose situation. If you're coming to Australia, go to Melbourne; great food and service, tipping optional! |

I've heard great things about Melbourne and the cuisine. Nice thing about Melbourne from what I've heard is that, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes because it's bound to change. |

Teleburst, you are reliably informed on both fronts. I personally think the weather is great there, but then I do like a bit of mystery. Lots of great places to eat, and not many chain restaurants like you get in other parts of the world. It's a long way from where you are, but if you're in the area then definitely drop in and see the city. |
