So those of us that 'support our service industry buddies'... here's another "what would you do/leave senerio" For those of us that "support our SIB's (servie industry buddies)... that leave a buck on a .75 cup of coffee, or $3-6 on a $2.00 breakfast, etc etc etc.... Here's one for you: (this is a true experience of mine, and I know what I did... what would you do/leave) Went to dinner at the restaurant I work at, with myself and my son, which with 3 people I get 1/3 of the bill discounted. I also had a $50 gift card (a gift from my boss for helping her re-landscape the grounds). And my "friend" waited on me... (not anyone of my co-workers, but one I WANT to give my $ to, and one who I knew (and did) give better service) The bill came to $75.00 my discount was $21.00 minus the $50.00 gift card plus taxes, it FINAL bill came to ruffly $7.00 what would you have tipped??? 20% on orignal bill $14.00-$16.00 the discount $21 $50 that you saved $25 half of what you saved? just curious. I know what I tipped, and I'll post it after I see what you would of done. PS.. non tippers, SIB's haters, Cheapasses.... no reason to respond... you will be overlooked (atleast by me!) |

Well, I too had a chance to eat basically for free at my own restaurant. Bill was 148.00. With the 90.00 comps and a free bottle of wine, the bill was about 2.00. I tipped 50.00. So in your example, I would have tipped 40.00 because 1: I'm getting alot for free, 2: A friend waited on me and took care of me. 25.00 would have been too small, unless my friend was telling me NOT to tip high and 50.00 was a bit high for the amount of the bill. 70%?! Things that made this question easy (no offense): You work there. You know the server. Getting a lot of food for free. Hope you had a great time! |

I'm a little less generous than voz, I think. Depending on the day and my mood, I'd have tipped between $30 and $40. |

At least 50% of what the original bill would have been. But, you should have made sure that your kid threw cheerios all over the place or puked on the floor. Just kidding, I'm sure you took care of them. My guess....you tipped $75.

If drinks are involved I'm usually a 100% tipper, so I would have tipped $75. I probably wouldn't have tipped less than $50 though since that was the amount of the gc... |

Tough call... yeah right. I am a overtipper. Just because I love to make a servers day/night whatever. I'd have left $50. And if service was great I'd have left more. Just me. I like to make people smile. Karma!! |

Rereading I'd probably left $75 because that's what you'd have spent on the meal. I'm an ass. |

I probably wouldn't have left any more just because of the fact that you were getting all the free stuff, but I do tend to tip well when I know the server. So, 20% of the full price meal for basic good service, more if the service was really good. |

I would have left $35. It still would be a great tip. The whole point of them giving you discounts is to save some money! |

I would have tipped over 25% if it was great service, which would be $20, because it's $18.75 for 25%, so I'd just go ahead and give $20. The gift card is just like paying with a credit card. It's NOT a discount. As far as the discount goes, the server STILL DELIVERED ME MY FOOD, so they SHOULD still get tipped as if I would be paying for my meal entirely. If I tipped much higher, WHAT in the world would be a point of the discount then, you know? |

The gift card is just like paying with a credit card. It's NOT a discount. No your wrong!! this is where you dont see eye to eye with service people... it was a GIFT card, not my debit card! it was a gift that someone else paid for, not me..... thus meaning a DISCOUNT for me and my pocket!!!!! If I tipped much higher, WHAT in the world would be a point of the discount then, you know? Ya just saved $75.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!! due to a employee discount AND a GIFT card!!!!! PLUS, it was a FRIEND serving!!!! YOU MUST QUIT READING BETWEEN THE LINES!!! or you MUST TAKING READING?COMPREHENSIVE/SION LESSONS!!! Holy Crap!!!!.... ya got me to respond to you! hopefully my last time!!! I cant respond to you because of my last 2-3 sentances to you!! Can't explain or debate things to the uneducated, unintelligent, ignorant souls of the world! See you think about what you saved..... I am grateful for what I saved, but also want to tip the server a reasonable amount......... Your tip is FINE, your reasoning is CoNfUsInG!!!!!(and again, a little tooo self consumed!!) The post wasn't about MY savings...it was about me tipping/helping/doing right by the server... or my friend! Nothing about ME in that!?!?! cuz, ya still saved $55.00 with a $20 tip..... or ya can leave $5 and walk out with a "hah, it's all about me attitude (diner!!!) and I saved a few bucks and screwed the server!"..... |

So Lords, if you got a gift card from Mom for 50.00 bucks and your meal is 45.00 bucks, do you tip the server? And if so, how much? |

vozveratu "So Lords, if you got a gift card from Mom for 50.00 bucks and your meal is 45.00 bucks, do you tip the server? And if so, how much?" As I stated before, a gift card is just like paying with my credit card. If I would get great service I would tip $12($11.25 would be 25%), because my service was really great let's say, so I'd just round up. I'd leave the $5 from my card and add $7 in cash. I would treat it as a non-coupon type of dining experience, because a gift card is NOT a discount or coupon of **ANY***kind. If I got not-so-great service, I'd just leave the $5. Now, if my service was in between there, $6. If my service was absolutely horrible, I'd tip nothing. If it was better than 15%, but not quite 20% $8.50. If it was not the best of the best, but really good service, $10. A gift card is just like paying with a credit card. Just because my mom would have paid for it, doesn't mean the server should get shaffed because of it. All a gift card is, is just a prepaid amount of money to the restaurant that has that amount of money whether you use it or not. A coupon for a couple of dollars off is completely different UNLESS the item is completely free, then that's just like a gift card, because the server is still serving that free appetizer(or whatever). The server should still get paid for them bringing me the food as long as they do a decent job. It's NOT a coupon. It's just like when I've had comps. I add in the prices of the stuff to find out what the ORIGINAL bill was and tip based off of that, because the server STILL served me the food. I am NOT talking about bad service here. That's different. I am talking about decent service. |

I tip 20% when I have a gift card. Somebody having a gift card doesn't entitle the server to more money. Somebody gives it to you so that dinner is on them, not so you can give money to the server. |

I'm not here to help you. It's a message board. That means a place for opinions. There is nothing wrong with 20%. The sense of entitlement on this thread is a little off. In no way is someone wrong for giving you 20% when using a gift card. A server who complains after receiving 20% is out of line. Period. |

I don't know why I have the impression that queenie wasn't charged for some things, her friend hooked her up. Could be wrong on that call. If that is the case more than 20-25% I think, is appropriate. If you have a gift card you may in actuality spend more. Have that appetizer or second glass of wine. Formerly Jammie

Absolutely. If I am hooked up than yes a higher tip is justified. If I am just using a gift card I do not feel more than 20% is necessary. If I'm feeling generous than why not. but I hate to hear servers acting like they're entitles just because I'm using a gift card. |

No, my friend did not NOT charge me for things... we were charged for everything.... I got a $21 employee discount on the bill, and had a$50 gift card (not charging things up would effect my boss's inventory and meat counts... we do not do that to a great boss!!!) Lords, your tip amount has me confused.... you are saying a gift card ISN'T a discount or coupon??? Then why are you tipping on the total before the "compensation"?!?! The origional bill was $75.00.... $12.00 tip is nowhere near 20-25%!!! Maybe I'm confused... Oh well, just prrof in the pudding we all are different and have different morals and tipping methods... the world isn't going to end over it! |

I have to give Lords credit for knowing the differences, but I disagree with the tipping she does for some of them. Gift Card - Cash value of the card used for food/beverage. Usually cannot be used for tips, but that can be worked around. Tip = 20% of the bill before the card is used: Ex - 200.00 Bill, 40.00 Tip, 100.00 Gift card = 140.00 Customer pays for experience. Discounts - 20% off card/coupon to use in the place advertising. Cannot be used for cash and is not redeemable after certain time period. Tip = 20% of the total bill before the discount: Ex - 200.00 bill, 40.00 tip, (20%) 40.00 discount = 200.00 Customer pays for the experience. Coupons - Coupon/card that gives the customer something for free on the menu. Free side item, free entree, or free dessert, etc. Cannot be used for cash and is not applied to tip. Tip - 20% of the total bill before discount: Ex - 200.00 Bill, 40.00 Tip, One free Entree (25.00) = 215.00 customer pays for the experience. Comps work like Coupons, but instead of the restaurant advertising the freebie, it's usually because of VIP treatment, Kitchen Error, Server Error, or special occasion. Voids don't count. Item not made and item is voided. Questions? Didn't think so...8p |

Reasons to tip more than usual - employee discount and being nice to a friend. On regular gift card tip exactly what you would otherwise, not more. If as in vozveratu's example a relative gives you a $50 gift card. If a relative gave you $50 cash for Christmas you wouldn't tip any differently. Same thing - same cost to giver, same value to you so same tip. |

I think what most servers do when they get a gift card or cash to eat at a restaurant is to spread the love. Some people aren't very good at spreading the love unless it's someone they personally know. I'm in the business and I know how rough it can be on a given night, so when I'm fortunate to get a gift and I have a nice night because my server was doing a good job, I'm going to give a little extra because I received a little extra. Some people don't. They stick with the rules and happily walk away knowing they saved a bunch of money by following the rules. Oh well, to each his/her own. |
