Here you go....proof that if you act like an ass, your stuff gets "forgotten" on accident, and you don't get treated like the royalty that you have come to expect. And I quote: "I wish the US would go to the Euro system. Because every self-righteous a-hole would get exactly what they deserve. I am from Poland, and I waited tables in Krakow while at University during the summer. I thought I'd let you know how people get treated when there is a flat service charge, and why I wish the US would follow suit. Just to warn you, you WON"T like what I"m going to say. Because my country puts education at a premium, and doesn't discriminate based on your family's income, you get in, you go. Free of charge, including books and room and board and the like. Now, you're in old-school Soviet dorms, but hey, I think most college students wouldn't mind free books, three meals a day, and a dorm room. So, I worked during the summers for extra pocket money. My "summer job" came with a livable Salary, tip pools and health/dental insurance. I had absolutely NO incentive to be nice to people. This was how I served the tourists (they were all tourists) 1. Loud Obnoxious Germans who don't speak Polish but speak louder and slower in German get everything last. Because they are loud and obnoxious Germans. And they killed my grandfather. Ditto for loud Americans who's family came from Poland, are here to see where their ancestors "came from" although their ancestors were probably peasants who lived in the countryside. Expect American service in an country that is NOT America. Their first clue should be the lack of English. SPeaking to me slowly and loudly in English doesn't make it better. Recent Immigrant debates seem to always say, if they want ot live here, they should speak English. So, by that logic, when Americans go to other countries, speak the damn langauge. Because otherwise, they are hypocritical. I spoke English before I moved here. But, if they yelled and were rude, I pretended I couldn't and let them order food I'm most certain they did not want. And carbonated water. Trolls. However, if they were nice, I'd gladly help them translate. And tell them, unless they ask, their water would have bubbles. Because we made a wage vs. a tip, we didn't have to be nice to you. Little Jr wants peanut butter and jelly and its not on the menu? Too effin bad. Should've gone to a place that actually serves that. Didn't like your meal? Should've ordered something that you knew you would like. Your satan children run around? They WILL be repremanded, and we WILL ask you to stop disturbing those around you. We DON"T change your diaper and lick your ass. When its break time, its break time. So what if there is one server for all twenty tables. I'm on break. You aren't the only customer, and certainly aren't treated as one. I made a mistake? opps. No skin off my back to rush around and fix it. Americans would never tolerate it because they feel they are entitled to stellar service. And that is the key...they feel they are "entitled" to stuff. That is why chains exist. It lets the "little people" feel big. And tipping only fuels that sense of entitlement. Its the same reason why you go into a coffee shop and see mothers having a nice chat while their little angles are causing havoc..and they ignore it. Because they feel they are ENTITLED to a good afternoon, everyone else be damned! I wish America would go to a service charge--just so those who feel they are entitled to royal treatment could experience how the world should work. People shouldn't have to kiss troll ass to make a living. I waited tables when I came to study here (my gov't stipends didn't cover my room and board, much less transportation, books, etc.) and was very successful, because I knew what Americans wanted and what Americans expected. If given my choice, I'd much perfer to go back to a service charge system. I seriously doubt Americans would want that. Soooo to keep the current system, they should actually tip people properly, and not be total assholes. Because trust me.....to the jerkoffs who were rude or demanding...I didn't "forget" to ring in their orders or run their coffee last by accident." If our gov would pay for all those things, I'd be up in that world of thought. Seeing as the gov is not going to pay for school/healthcare, I'll take my 15%-20% chances instead of a salary. Good post, though. I think I'll go to Hawaii. |
