I recently hired movers for the first time. I live in Chicago. I moved from a 3 story walk-up to a highrise in the Michigan Ave area. First of all, the movers were an hour and a half late. Second, they moved very slow...almost as if they were trying to make the time drag on so I would have to pay more. They weren't unpleasant, but not exactly the friendliest of people...I never once saw anything even resembling a smile from the head guy. The other 2 were just goofing off, rambling on and on in Spanish the whole time, but at least were laughing and smiling. The only time any of them ever talked to me at all was when they were arguing with me trying to tell me that my couch wasn't going to fit in the elevator...when I knew for a fact that I would. I was very nice to them, even in my arguing!!

I was just one person moving. I only had a queen size mattress/box springs, a small entertainment center, dresser, 2 27" tvs, media shelf, 2 person kitchen table, couch, and tv stand...that's it. I moved everything else myself because that's all I could afford. The couch and bed were slightly difficult getting into the elevator at the new place, but other than that there weren't any challenges.

I don't know why, but it never even occured to me that I was supposed to tip them. The $340 I gave them had already put a huge hole in my pocket, and when he told me that tip wasn't included...I almost had a heart attack. He said that $20 each was standard! To stall, I told him I needed to run across the street to go to the ATM. As I did that, I called my dad, who told me he had never heard of tipping movers and not to give him a cent. I felt really bad (I was a waitress for almost 10 years!), but I really couldn't afford to pay him anymore anyway, so I didn't.

I came here to find out the deal on tipping movers. Am I awful for not giving them anything? They were very hateful...calling me "Un-American" and everything.

What do you think?

That was pretty rude for them to tell you what the "standard" was and that you needed to tip them at all. No, they don't have to smile, as they aren't waiting tables, but then again, servers aren't really required to either. The fact that they were taking their sweet time, costing you more money was reason enough not to tip. I'd call the company and tell them exactly what you told us, or print out what you wrote and send that in.

I would definitely say that telling someone that a tip isn't included breaks the first rule of tipping. Anyway, I don't think you owe a tip, I always offer drinks, food (for bigger moves)and maybe I'm screwy but that seems fair. I did tip the guys who brought our new bed/dresser set, but that is because my pregnant eternally fussy girlfriend asked them to reposition everything several times. Maybe somebody whose been a mover could throw some insight in.

I'm all for tipping... but not $20 bucks each for such a small move!! I am thinking beverage and a hotdog maybe.. or a $10 spot for a quick drive thru Micky D's for lunch!

But with attitude and ignorance... "you get nothing"... as soooo deserved!

In general, I guess I would tip IF they did a good job. I'm also in Chicago, moved one high rise to another on Lake Shore Dr. It was just my stuff but had more of it :-). The labor bill was about $350, I rented the truck myself and paid $25/hr each which pretty much went straight to them (small company coop group of friends type place that just supplied the muscle). I tipped them $25 each, there were two guys. It took alot longer than I expected (and more expensive) but they didn't waste time.

In your case, wasting time negates need for a tip, plus telling you he expected a tip is rude. I agree with bistroy, I'd call the company and tell them about the wasting time and tell them what they said "They were very hateful...calling me "Un-American" and everything. " no matter what there is no excuse for that.

$20 per mover is standard. I also see nothing wrong with them telling you the tip wasn't included.

But wasting time and giving you attitude as well as calling you names was uncalled for and warrants a call to their supervisor. That also loses them most or all of their standard tip.

I just had my stuff moved, and I didn't tip them a damn thing, b/c about 5 expensive items of mine were broken. I was good and ready to tip them until I inspected my stuff (they broke my recliner, 2 TV's, a kitchen chair, and a few other items).

I don't think you should have tipped them in your situation b/c I think they over charged you for your move.
