Hello all, I'm wondering if any of you have experience with monthly parking - how much and when to tip the attendants? I live in Brooklyn NY and am not sure what is appropriate for my local monthly parking - just at holiday time? Monthly? Every time I pick up the car? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! - Kier |

I have been doing monthly parking in a couple garages over the last many years in Chicago downtown/northside. No tippping is really EVER required when parking at a valet type residential garage. Virtually no one tips every time you pick up the car thats why you are paying monthly. Of course if they do something more than just getting the car, like helping you unload heavy bags/packages its up to you. But in general tips are not expected. Much different than the valets at restaurants who always seem to have their hand out. If you feel like it tip/gift at holiday time. Many/most condo/rental building garages set up holiday funds for the garage which is distributed to them for those who wish to contribute (voluntary and most don't). Instead some folks (not many) will hand envelopes to individual valets at the holidays if they feel someone in particular has been extra helpful. |

What kind of attendants are they? Are they valets? Whatever the case, people who you associate with on an ongoing basis usually are not tipped at every transaction. If you tip them, it's usually a yearly, monthly, or holiday sort of thing. It sort of like the doorman at an apartment building. You surely wouldn't tip him every time he opens the door, which would be at least twice a day. |
