hands down the thing I loved about bartending was Sundays and Mondays. Sunday night was my favorite to work. The only people out drinking on Sundays are real pros and real amateurs and watching their worlds collide was endlessly entertaining. Monday was my day off and I can't tell you how much I miss being able to go to the grocery store, the bank, the barber, the mall and the gym and not have wait in line for anything. Best day of the week to be off. While the rest of the suckers were packing themselves into clubs on Fri/Sat, me and the rest of the bar crew were out Mondays, sprawled out all over our favorite bars, play pool, watch TV what ever we want, nobody was there to get in our way.
tiqueen, I think your #1 is why I still hang around the biz. I love the people I meet and even the ones I hate I have come to look forward to seeing in a strange way.

~being able to dress up for Halloween
~being OFF for Christmas and Thanksgiving
~being able to have a FREE champagne toast on New Years Eve and/or a Bloody Mary on New Years Day!!!
~having a "potluck" every Sunday where everyone brings a dish to share (as well as EVERY Holiday!!)

I love bistroys "learning other facets of life"... like learning how to use anger management and learning how to deal with one that NEEDS anger management!!!??? I must agree!! Sorta like taking on a new challenge with every table set!!!

One thing I like is the extended family. Coworkers and regulars alike. You share a common bond. Its kind of weird how you get really close to some of of the other employees in a short period of time. Customers too, when they are there everyday its like they become part of that family.

tipqueen - you reminded me of one of my favorite traditions. I've worked the last 6 Thanksgiving days and our bar potluck is something I'll miss greatly, but remember fondly. Big employee dinner, busy night great money, everybody goes back to somebodies house for post game drinks. Priceless. Thank you for reminding me.

I'm going to have to start up this potluck dinner thingy here. Sounds like a wonderful idea, although there are probably some of us here that can't cook. I'd let them bring some cheap stuff though. That's allright.

bistroy - they really are great, especially during really fast and or slow times. Back when we had a much stabler (and better cooking) staff we would do theme night - taco party, who makes the best stew/spagetti sauce, etc. It really passes the time on a dead night, and there is nothing better than not having to eat restaurant food on a busy night. If I'm eating something in big gulps while going to change kegs I like it to be homemade. Give it a try

I'll be sure to bring it up with the staff, and of course, our chef. He might get a little offended if we don't eat his food. You know how it goes.

Bistroy,
We leave it pretty "simple"... chips and dips/salsa, granola bars, lil' debbies, and yes, even cereal!! ... every now and then someone will make a crock of chili or bake a cake or cookies..... but the chips and salsa or cheese and crackers seem to be the biggest hits!
It works well for us, and hasn't caused any problems interfering with work, thats the best thing!
Try it, get a few bags of chips and some dip and set it out one night.... bet you're staff will be shocked, surprised and abit excited! Let them know that next time they bring the "goods"!
