Here's my question...

For those of you holding a position where tipping is accepted (such as valet, food server, hair dresser, newspaper carrier, dog groomer, house/babysitter, host/hostess, dry cleaner, landscaper/gardener, car wash, maid, personal trainer, dance instructor, massage therapist, delivery boy/girl, bartender, doorman, bellman, room service, taxi driver, barber, manicurist, porter/skycap, tour guide, and the thousands of other service-related professions that I have missed) what is it that drove you to take that job? Maybe "drove" is not a good word...how about...what interested you in taking this position?

Myself, I actually have fun dealing with different people every day. Other reasons include a flexible schedule, cash in hand at the end of the shift, being appreciated for helping people, making friends (with co-workers and customers), and getting discounts on food.

There's others that will follow, that's all I could think of right off the top of my head.

I have a hard time being sincere with someone who has started out by being rude and insulting. Because really its none of its business. Its kind of a little late for idle chit chat or gentle discussion.

Hey hey, it was a sincere question. Let's give him some time to degrade us before we degrade him.

jammie I couldn't agree more. if this person wants respectful answers it needs to show respect first. A great olive branch on its part would be to explain what it does for a living and how it got its job (hint hint). Me thinks it will choose to create a new screen name and continue attacking rather than getting mature and discussing.

Hey, I am capable of discussion, even if I do not agree with the other person.(people) That's what makes the world a beautiful place we are all different.
What does a person expect when they start out by making derogitory posts? Now it wants to get information, why so it can rip us apart? Do you really think it cares? I dont.

~that drove you to take that job? Maybe "drove" is not a good word...how about...what interested you in taking this position?~

I think it's kind of funny that even when it tries to ask a "legitimate" question it still throws the "drove you to this work", dig in. If drove wasn't a good word, why not delete it? It clearly has self esteem issues that can only be satisfied by reinforcing its own deluded superiority by chopping down others. I think its actions only reinforce both my claim that it was ignored by its parents and that it probably got blown off by a female server a good number of times. This explains its calling jammie a lesbian. As in - "The reason the hot bartender doesn't like me isn't because I'm a total TOOL* (going to see TOOL in Sept. had to plug them) its that the bartender is a lesbian.
How close are we getting carrier?

Actually, I love serving tables. Love the social atmosphere and I love excelling in an enviornment where many cant cope. And quite frankly I love being good at serving.

The tip is also nice. Sometimes its not even the amount, its the percentage. Its an instant rating system. No quarterly review for servers, our review are one per table. And I like it.

Also Its nice to have fun with wine and food. Some fine dining restaurants are a little too impressed with themselves. People should be enthusiastic about food and wine, but should never be awed because of the waiters demenour. At least in my opinion.

I'll entertain:

Started out in a cafeteria as a busboy, 17 years old and going to school. Finished highschool and got a job at Chili's as a cook. Worked for 5 years and being a corporate trainer, decided to go to college for a degree in Hotel/Restaurant management. Teacher told me that I need experience in other types of restaurants/hotels.

Got a job in the Hyatt as a server. That's where it began. Worked 3 years, did intern and met my wife all in that span of that time.

Went to a small bakery as a baker and worked nights as a waiter in a small fine-dining restaurant; which was owned by the same owner of the bakery. Wife also worked in the restaurant.

After a fall out with the owner, we quit and I started working at Chilis again, but as a cook. Wife went to a Country Club.

After about 6 months, chef at the Country Club hired me as the Tennis Club Kitchen Manager. Wife and I worked together again. After the season, I got a job working at a steakhouse, which was open only in the evenings. Got a job at First Union during the day as an Online Specialist. Decided to take a job at the Country Club as a Food/Beverage Director. Didn't like it, so I went back to the bank.

Started swaying toward the bank life and went part time in the restaurant world. After about 5 years, I was working as an Online Support Analyst making a salary and working part time at a new restaurant (current place of work), part-time.

Was displaced from the bank and went full time at the restaurant.

Got a job at the bank again, but in customer service. Hate it and plan on going into the field of Electrician. Have a meeting with a Journeyman on Friday and I'll be doing that full time during the day and working at the restaurant during the night.

Once done with the apprenticeship program, I'll be making enough to not require my services in the restaurant world, but I'll miss the nightly cash... :-(

Of all the jobs I've worked, it's the restaurant where I have the most fun. Employees are a hoot, managers are laid back, and taking care of customers is a good feeling that can be seen immediately. The money is good, of course, which is icing on the cake.
