How's the new job going? Also, I am seriously craving some garlic noodles. Plain noodles have never tasted as good as at PF Chang's. |

It's been tough financially. Right now, it's very slow downtown. I've lost well over $2k in the month that I've been there. This week since Monday, I've made $90 and "worked" 4 shifts. Monday lunch I had two tables. 6 people. Made $20. Monday night, I was in the bar. Because it was the night before the 4th, I had exactly ZERO tables. But they didn't cut me until 9:30. So I spent 5 hours studying the wine list and twiddling my thumbs after setting everything up (and breaking it down, of course). Then, yesterday lunch, I was sent home because we only had 4 reservations on the books. Of course, I had to come in and do the sidework and polish the tables and stand around until noon until they were sure that we weren't going to get enough walk-in traffic to justify keeping me (they sent another server home as well, so I wasn't alone). Then, last night I had two tables. One was a deuce that spent $140 on their anniversary dinner and they left me 20%, and I had a 6 top that spent $550 and left me $70 and then stayed for a litle while after they paid and spent another $40 on shots, which they left me $4.30 on. So, after tipout, I ended up walking with about $75. To be fair, I don't think I deserved anything more than 15% on that table, because they were a little difficult to wait on due to the fact that they were doing business and talking intently most of the time and I didn't feel like I was able to "crack the code" due to my inexperience with serving in this particular restaurant (you know about having to find the rhythm of the kitchen, the bar, your fellow servers and your diners). So, I'm saying that I probably deserved the tip that I got. I've been on the floor for a week now and I've waited on exactly 7 tables since last Wed. I'm just about flat broke and I've gone through virtually all of my reserves. But it will get better, IF I can make it through the next two months. Saturday night should offer some great income, because I'm back in the bar with another server who usually works it (they certainly weren't going to make him have to suffer the night before the 4th <g>) and we both think we're going to get pounded because there's a major Kenny Chesney concert, Bill Maher at a local theater and The Nashville Symphony all at the same time. We should get pounded, and service in the bar is a little easier because we don't have to jump through as many hoops as we do on the dining room floor. I'm off today and tomorrow, but nobody is giving up shifts right now because everyone takes a big hit in July and August. Once September comes, it's balls-to-the-wall through Christmas, which is what I'm counting on. I just hope I have enough practice when it hits the fan. For those who think I'm bitching. I'm not. Just answering the question. I"m a big boy who is responsible for my own fate and know my current limitations. But it will get better and handling the big spenders will eventually come back to me. Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. And yes, the garlic noddles ARE nice... |

Teleburst, I'm going through the same thing. Monday was so dead, they sent me home. Off on Tuesday. Wednesday in the bar with zero tables. Off Thursday. I work the weekend, but we have no concert. I'm hoping it will be busy anyway. |

I'm sorry to hear that but it should be worth it come September. Is there anything you can do for extra cash right now? Maybe some deliveries at the old restaurant? Of course I know that may not be appealing. I'm waiting tables now through the summer while school is out at my old restaurant. It's a fancy movie theater with a bar and semi fine dining restaurant. When I first started the movies out were DaVinci Code (at the end of it's run), garfield, and the Lake House. Now things a month later are finally starting to pick up with Superman and Pirates coming out tonight. We've had those nights where they send people home because there's only 2 reservations and 5 servers. I'm with you. Those suck. Good Luck! |
