All right, I usually don't complain, but this host we had at an upscale Italian was completely incompetent.

I was taking my father out for Father's Day, and I had made reservations in advance. Predictably, there was a line for the Host. My father and I stood in line, awaiting our turn. When our time came to speak to the host, the party fo four behind us simply WALKED AROUND US and began to speak to the host. My father and I looked at the host, expecting him to say I'm sorry, these gentlemen were ahead of you. Nope, he just looks up their name and disappears to make sure their table is ready, leaving us to glare at the party that cut us, who refused to make eye contact with me or my father.

I proceeded to make offhand comments to my father like "boy, I hope they're that eager to jump in our graves," "I guess we must be invisible," etc. The line cutters refused to acknowledge my comments, they simply stared at their shoes. Eventually, the host came back and seated the line cutters.

While we waited for the host to return, the party of 6 behind me WALKED AROUND US, just like the previous line cutters did. Well, by that point, my father and I had had enough. There was an old woman at the head of this party, and we stepped ahead of her. She stepped up with us. Before long, we were almost crammed in the doorway to the dining area. The host approaches and I started to talk to him and the OLD WOMAN tries to TALK OVER ME.

"Excuse me, we have reservations!!! Reservations!" screeches the old c.u.n.t.

"So do we," I shot back, "and we were ahead of you."

The old woman just glared at me when I said this. The rest of her party looked mildly embarrassed and all the while the host looks between me and the woman as if he doesn't know who showed up first! We had been standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF THIS MORON for ten fuckin' minutes!!! So he checks BOTH of our names and disappears, leaving me to glare at the wrinkly ruin of hatred two feet from me.

When the host returns, he grabs six menus, and TAKES THE LINE CUTTERS IN FIRST!! My god, I couldn't believe it! Then, and only then, did the host return and take us in to the dining area... and our was (you guessed it!) right between both line cutting parties!

I know this may sound a little childish, but man... that experience just ruined the whole damn meal. We didn't complain, we didn't take our anger out on the server, but it ruined the whole meal.

I just don't get it. We were STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HOST. He watched the FIRST party cut us. He MUST have known we were next, yet he feigned confusion and opted to go with the second party of line cutters. What an idiot.

I needed to vent. I feel better, now. :-)

Father's Day is a very crazy day in the world of serving. The host should have spoke to you anyway. Sometimes the tables are not ready. Maybe they didn't have a 2 top and they had tables set for the other parties?
Customers are rude. We have to deal with that on a daily basis.

eaterofworlds, I'm not going to come up with excuses, because there is none. Host was an idiot and the other customers were jerks. I got mad just reading what you wrote and yes, it can ruin the whole night when other customers are being rude like that.

It's a shame. A crying shame.

You did more than what I would have done though, so my hat tips your direction.

Well, we were sat at 4 top... and the restaurant, curiously enough, wasn't full. About 80% of the tables were occupied.

Anyhow, I know what it's like to deal with customers. I was a waiter for about 2 years at regular chain restaurant (which is why I frequent this board - I can relate, lol).

Yeah, I got upset just reading your post. Good job handling it, it would have been much uglier if I had been there - anything other than Fathers Day or other special occasion would have involved discussion with the manager a VERY LOUD VERY UGLY scene in front of as many customers as possible and picking up McD's on the way home.

I can excuse the host - it's a tough job and they are usually young and clueless - I can excuse the host for anything that happened before you spoke up - sometimes they don't realize what happened, for all he knows those people told you they had a reservation and you said to go ahead, and that conversation happened before the host was there. Everything after you spoke up was inexcusable.

Honestly, if I'm seated next to these people that just screwed me, I'm not going to have a very pleasant dinner. And, I guarantee you, they won't either. But, that's just me, because I'm kind of a jerk.
