So before our shift starts, and we have 80+ customers in the books, our computers go down. You don't realize the importance of computers in a restaurant until you're without one. - Hand write checks and have to turn them into the kitchen. - Tally up items and add tax. - Fill out old school credit card slips to verify later. On top of this mess, a 22 top walks in and states they had reservations for a table. We had to open the private dining room to fit them in. Money was good, but man what a cluster fudge...8p |

Oh Voz, it must have been contagious ! We went down tonight too!! It was awful, but made serious cash, how does that work? I think maybe people feel sorry for you or something. We lost power in the entire airport, it was a nightmare. Old school charge card carbon copies, what did we ever do before computers? |

I think what makes it hard today compared to the past when computers were not used as much in restaurants, is the procedure. When computers were not around in restaurants, hand written tickets were handed into the kitchen. Since most kitchens have 2-3 stations, servers used tri-colored carbon copies. We did this in Chili's when I used to work there. Then when the customer was ready to pay, you'd send the check your wrote on through the register that would print and record the items. Then you'd use the VISA/MC terminal thingy for credit card (checkcards didn't exist back then) or cash out the check is the customer paid in cash. Now, as computers got advanced, kitchens have received printers for you to send in orders by computer, credit cards are swiped on the computer, food can be placed on hold, or fired by the computer after a certain time has passed. Etc. When our system went down, our process is built around the computer, not the other way around. That's what makes it hard on us servers compared to the old days. Jammie; must have been sympathy tips because that's what it felt like for me, as well. |

Yeah, our back up generator didnt fire up either. To be quite honest in an airport I was rather scared. 9/11 wasnt so far in the past it seems like a fabel. our whole system is centered around the computer, the brains of the outfit. I must date myself and fess up that I remember when.... we didnt have computers and wrote everything by hand. Now that seems like a wives tale. |
