Thanks to bistroy for the idea.
So I go into the book store to sell back a pysch book. Of course the kid behind the counter is far to busy typing on his laptop to help me. Just mumbling to himself about how waiters don't actually work for a living. It occurs to me if this kid wasn't paid a wage by the University, and worked for tips I might actually be getting my book exchanged. He tells me I'll get 6 bucks back for the book. Six bucks on a $50 dollar book. I point to the sign in the window that says 10% back on all books and tell him that he is breaking the contract I have with the owner of the book store. He says that this book is not used anymore, and that the owner wasn't going to give anything for it. I say the contract I have doesn't say anything about out of use books it says 10%. He pops off about how he has to study AND work 15 hours a week and it isn't his problem. Now I really wish he worked for tips because I could never get away with saying something like that to a customer. This could have gone on for hours but unlike this kid I have a full course load AND work 40 hours a week. So I take the six bucks walk to the bar across the street buy a $2 beer and leave the rest for someone I know has to work for a living. This is why I hate campus book stores and the slugs who work in them. |

i second what jena said. unless you made an explanatory error then you should have been happy with six bucks.
its not his choice besides, its the owners choice and so you would penalize him for something that isnt his fault. it isnt his job to please you its his job to follow policy. |

what was the percentage?
In every bookstore I've used out of use books get about $3-$5. $6 is pretty good! |

Jena, I was just poking a little fun at diner - a man who considers spending a few hours a week exchanging books to be excessively taxing, while at the same time thinking bartending servering is as taxing as a lazy sunday afternoon in the hammock. My speed sarcasm isn't what it used to be. |

~as i said im on a need-blind scholarship. on top of that i work at the campus store to make my money. stop being ignorant and making assumptions i had to work ridiculously hard to get to where i am right now.~ |

I don't disrespect you for your scholarship or your job. I disrespect you because you seem to think your life is somehow harder than mine and others. You seem to think that our job is not worthy of respect because we didn't need to get a piece of paper from a diploma factory college. I disrespect you because you seem to be working hard in school but you haven't learned how to be decent and civil to other human beings. But not because of your scholarship and job. |

Well, then please tell me, why you were out of my favorite t-shirt with the school's logo on it? I've seen other students and fans of the team wearing it, why don't you have one for me? I'm calling to complain, because I saw someone else walking out of your store, after I was in there, and they had the shirt on that I wanted!! I also expect for you to be fired on the spot, and I want some free 8 1/2 x 11 paper for my printer, just for that!!

makes sense to who? To you, you are the final word? What I do makes sense to me, and it may come as a huge shock to you, thats what counts.
Ya know diner usually I'm not so cruel, but my dear you have earned every slam of it. You have been rude, condescending, ignorant. Made assumptions that were just not true, categorized all of us tipped employees in one tidy heap. You started out flaming from your opening post, then cried becasue nobody respected you. That doesn't constitute a contractual offer. (FYI: Advertisements very rarely do.) |

False advertising and contractual violations are distinct concepts. You can have an instance of false advertising without a contract violation. You can also have a contract violation without a false advertising claim. You can have both. You can have neither. |

Okay everyone, this was meant to be a joke in the first the place and it got ruined the moment I didn't preview and posted it with the screwed up percentages. Since this bookstore is a figment of my imagination I would like to end further debate. Teleburst is absolutely correct. At this imaginary bookstore the sign was not an invitation to negotiate. It was a specfic offer, in fact, if you read the imaginary fine print it says right on the sign: (this advertisement represents a binding offer on my part to reimburse you 10% on all books) Again, had I not fudged the number it would have been funny. I declare teleburst to be the correct one in assessing what goes on in the revrunds imaginary bookstore. |
