Whatever happened to manners? Please? Thank you? May I have? I miss waiting tables right now. But as an old employer once told me... it's in my blood. I will always find my way back to the industry. He's right. I have no doubt about it. Right now I'm filling my time by working at a convience store. Hate it but it is paying my bills and then some! Money in the bank is a good thing! Plus I am making a lot of good contacts and Karma is taking care of me. ANYWAYS.... If I had ever said "Gimme" "I want"... my Mom would've washed my mouth out with soap after she had smacked me on the butt for the disrespect and lack of manners. And let's face it I am 41 she probably would've and had smacked my mouth. I'm not talking about child abuse here. The ADULTS are the ones with the bad manners where I work. Tonight on my way home from work John says to me... I made some kid mad tonight. I asked how. (He's running a fireworks stand outside of the store for the owner.) Two kids one saying gimme... ect... and the other one saying please and thank you. John gave the little girl a box of sparklers and the little boy said "what do I get for free?" He looked at him and said "you didn't use any manners and never said thank you". The child looked at him and smirked... Thank you. John said.... TOO LATE! The father was irrate about this. He told him to "give" his son something too. He held his ground... And said "Sir, your daughter was rewarded because she had manners. Your son was rude. If you would like for him to have a box of sparklers that will be $2. I'm sorry. Will that be cash?" I'm sorry if this didn't make any sense but tough night at work and well I just wondered where manners went in this country? I'm from NY and have lived in South Carolina for almost 13 years.... so don't understand where the "southern hospitality" is. I've met a few with manners but not many! So please excuse me while I go ponder this with a few Coors Lights... I thank you all for your time if you actually read my craziness! P.S. Heat index today at 116.... Lady pulls up in front of the pumps... we watch her roll up all the windows in her truck... baby in the passenger seat... She comes in and is in the store for almost 15 minutes. People crack does not smoke itself! So sorry too many topics in one post. |

coors, funny you bring this subject up, I have had this conversation a few times lately. I have had adults and recently, "Gimmme a Bloody Mary." I said,"Excuse me, did you just say gimmme, becasue want to make sure I heard you right." Now the guy is a little embarrassed and said, "Please may I have a Bloody Mary." "Well now thats much better, you do have some manners." By the end we we all laughing and no harm was done. I bet this guy will think a little harder next time he lumbers up to the bar and starts ordering the help around like barn yard animals. I know I'm old and grumpy, but I just dont have the patience for it, rudeness. I'm with you coors, my mother would have biffed my head. Why becasue she would have been mortified if a child of hers was rude. I find myself at the grocery stores and retail stores saying thank you to the clerk and wishing them a great day/weekend. I think I'm just programmed being in this biz for so long. Hey, when I'm the customer I want to be thanked. Had a kid yesterday at the pool supply store just stare at me. When the transaction was finished, I stopped and looked dead at him. After a few seconds he mumbled "thank you." Gee, sorry I bothered you buddy, I'll be more considerate next time. As a matter of fact, I dont think I will bother them at that pool store anymore. Coors, I'm 44 and if my mother witnessed me not using manners, she would still bitch slap me, I'm sure. She should have played tennis, because I have never seen a back hand like hers. I think she also had martial arts training because you never see it coming, shes quick. Now I'm just being dramatic, but you get the idea. She consistently enforced the usage of proper manners. So it really didnt take my brother and I long at all to realize what was required of us. That's the problem, look at who is raising these children. People with no manners. With my son, I had a difficult time getting him to say thank you. He was shy and embarrassed, it was worse for him after the fact to approach Uncle Russle and say thank you. Instead of just doing it at the time. I explained that timing was imperative, not some time in the future, after being told by mom to say it. I told him "Look when people do nice things for you, you must immediately thank them, it makes them feel good about doing a kind act. If they feel good about doing a kind act, you will get more stuff." For some reason that penetrated his little brain. we write thank you notes to my aunts and uncles and grandmother when they send him birthday money or Christmas presents. Another dying tradition. |

i agree i have had my share of gimme, or just the word, BREAD, but my favorite is when they look at you and point at whatever it is they want. i always say what, excuse me i don't understand, then they bark refill, and i say oh you want me to PLEASE get you a refill, ok sure, what are you drinking because i am not your waitress so i do not know, you can always go to the kitchen with me and point at the soda machine what flavored drink you want. they tend get embarrassed or annoyed and then they say (not bark) coke. you drop it off and they go thank you. i swear some people that go to eat in restaurants leave their manners and their intelligence at home, or in the car. |

Jammie, you are to be commended. I wish more parents would demand that their kids practice common courtesies. Like my mom used to always say "its nice to be nice." |

Ty byron. I will have to say there are some rewards. My date for the company Christmas party was my 14 year old. People are still commenting to me as to what a well mannered and polite young man I have. Plus hes a snappy dresser, he surely didnt get that from his dad. I am very proud of him, when he was younger he could be a rotten little bastard sometimes. We overcame that hurdle. |

Coors, what part of SC?? I'm in G'ville, and know all too well of the stuck up snobs that have no manners around here. Everyone else seems pretty cool, though. I think everywhere has their share of rude people. Some more than others. But that's why every road's connected in some way. They can travel anywhere they want. Oh, BTW, I'm not new here, I just couldn't post 'till Manny cleared a mistake I made in the registration process, and I know a few of ya'll on BW, so I feel sorta' welcome here already. (Paco and Lords, suck it!!) |

Thank you for bringing up manners. So many times while I'm out delivering pizzas, the customer has no porch light on at night, no obvious house numbers, don't have their money ready, and then to add insult to injury, when I greet them politely with HI or Hello...they answer "how much is it?" |

bistroy, just below Rock Vegas! pizzawoman... my main complaint tonight because the store down the street was "gimme some gas" I swear I wanted to fart! The public has no manners anymore. They want everything "gimme. now." Please and Thank You do not even enter the mind! Highlite of my night... little girl about 3 comes in with her gramma. She is cute as she can be. "gramma may I have some ice cream?" Gramma says "Yes you may as soon as I am done here." Yes Mame... (or however you spell it) She waits until her gramma does what she has to do. Her gramma turns to her and says "thank you for waiting for me... what kind of ice cream would you like" Little girl ASKS... (yes lords caps here!) May I have chocolate? Gramma replies... yes you may!!!!! This is a CHILD 3 maybe 4 that has better manners than most adults. She is what I hope my grandchild will be. I think that she will become someone! Oh and this child I spoke of would be a black child with proper dictation. Imagine that!!!! There is a right way and a wrong way to ASK for something. By any race. But gimme???????? I realize the south says hello by saying "hey". That I don't get upset at. But if you are greeted by a smile and a hello....... and act like you are a spawn of lords.. Working with today's public sucks even more because of the evilness of the "gimme" attitude! |

The problem is rude or not those people are paying your salary. And they know it. They can give you zero to 100 percent tip for your services. Busy Friday night at the restaurant, server approaches the 4-person table; ready to take the order; The young girl who must be on her mid twenties tells the server; I want a Perrier and I want it now! Server: I am sorry but I cant just go to bar and get Perrier without ringing it up first. So it will be a minute. Girl: You job is to serve me, and I dont care how you get around your stupid system to get me my beverage. Server: All right I will try my best. But what about everybody else, do they want to order anything? Girl: Every minute you spent here taking orders instead of bringing my beverage is costing you tips. Server: Madam, you can keep your money. It is not about money anymore, you will get the same service everyone else is getting. If you like you can talk to the manager. Talk about rude! We get those people all the time. Thats another reason www.fairtip.org exists. Sorry, I would like to write you more stories but I have to go work for busy Saturday night. Thank You. |

Yakup, there's one of two things that would probably happen in that instance. 1. The server would refuse any further service to the table. 2. The server would never give them "the same service everyone else is getting." This table has just been set on the back burner, and the server will give the same service everyone else is getting to everyone else. There's no salvaging a tip on a table like that. I haven't visited your site yet, but I can bet that its a bunch of BS, judging by your shanagans on here. |

The young girl who must be on her mid twenties tells the server; I want a Perrier and I want it now! I would have said, "Yes ma'am, right away. Would any of the guests care for anything, or are we all drinking Perrier? Server: I am sorry but I cant just go to bar and get Perrier without ringing it up first. So it will be a minute. I wouldn't have said that. Customers don't understand the workings of the restaurant. Girl: You job is to serve me, and I dont care how you get around your stupid system to get me my beverage. See, told you. Server: All right I will try my best. But what about everybody else, do they want to order anything? Should have been said earlier, but nicer tone. Girl: Every minute you spent here taking orders instead of bringing my beverage is costing you tips. If this was said right after asking what the guests would want, I would nod and turn foot to the bar to get the sparkling water. This would do two things: 1: I'd be getting what the woman is dying for. 2: She would be stuck at the table of friends, who are now burning holes in her head for being rude to me and not letting them get a drink, as well. Server: Madam, you can keep your money. It is not about money anymore, you will get the same service everyone else is getting. If you like you can talk to the manager. Throwing gas on the fire. Talk about rude! We get those people all the time. If that is all the time, my arse would be looking for another job. Not worth it. Thankfully, for some reason in my city, people are kind and nice and ask for things. We get some people that are a bit demanding, but the company they are with keep the control. No one wants to eat out with a jerk, just as a server doesn't want to wait on one. |

vozveratu "I want a Perrier and I want it now! HONESTLY, that person was VERY, VERY, VERY RUDE and I am NOT just saying that either. I usually say "I want such-n-such" or "Can I have such-n-such", but NEVER DEMAND things unless the server is RUDE to me. That was not necessary and I would truly be hurt if I was a server to hear that being told to me about "I want it now." Where do these people get off that they think they are the ONLY PEOPLE in the restaurant? I KNOW it at least takes SOME TIME to get things. I don't expect it in 1 minute UNLESS it is a MISTAKE. Did these RUDE assholes give you a tip at all? I may be a picky eater and expect perfect service, but at the same time, I NEVER, EVER, been RUDE to a server by telling them "I want it now." That is a SERVANT that handles that, NOT a server. That is truly VERY CRUEL and for the VERY FEW TIMES I agree with somethings MOST people say on this board, this is one of them. That is just plain RUDE as all hell for that person to act like RIGHT NOW within one minute they should get their order. Why do they think they are ANY MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYONE ELSE? I truly would like to know if they left you anything, because I am willing to bet they didn't leave you much. I am NOT mean like that, I really mean that, I just want GREAT service, that's all. |

"Talk about rude! We get those people all the time. If that is all the time..." To me voz, that sounds like a conversation in yakup's head. But that's just me. It just doesn't sound like a real conversation at all. It sounds like something made up to support a website that is struggling to gain traction. |

To me voz, that sounds like a conversation in yakup's head. I agree. I've NEVER had anyone speak that way to me or anyone else I know, for that matter. Just entertaining to explain how I would have handled this so called, Quote "Customer" unquote. PS: Thanks for backing me up, Lords. I know you don't treat servers badly like that. |
