Our restaurant incorporates a 6 person auto-grat for large parties. In some cases we are glad it's added on the bill, but in most cases we wish we can take it off.

Good news is we have the auto-grat listed, but we also allow the customer to tip extra if they felt the service was truely outstanding. In a lot of cases, we have received 'extra-love' from the customer paying.

By incorporating an auto-grat of 20% on all checks, we are keeping ourselves from making more money.

Granted, we don't have to worry about ever being stiffed, but most customers that are cheap on the tip are also cheap on the merchandise. The less the customer spends, the less we have to tip out, so no harm really done.

True, when I was a server I could read my table in order to determine if I needed to grat them. Often times a good server can get tipped over the grat. www.thewaiterswalk-incooler.blogspot.com
