I will not share my tips with anyone. I am very good at what I do and I am not going to bust my tail while someone else drags around and collects from my hard work. |

Some of the food servers I have talked to like shareing tips as ,no customer gets neglected as they are not any one's exclusive customer. This only works if you don't have any slackers working with you. Customers usually expect their tip to go to who served them. The do not think managements payroll should be paid by the food servers. |

How do you keep from sharing tips if that is the policy of the place where you work? Do you just look for another job? |

Our Sunday Brunch is a tip pool procedure while all the other shifts are based on normal tipping procedures, ie tip outs. The reason why the servers went to tip pool on Sunday brunch is because of the setup needed to get the brunch open. Requires all the servers to setup and break down. Since all of us are there, we might as well share the money along with the work. Keeps the slackers away from brunch who don't like to pool, which is why we went to that procedure. Our normal shifts require us to 'tip out' the support staff, which I'm all for. The other job I had, the tip-out was way too high. 30% of tips. So if I made 100.00 for the night, I really only made 70.00. How do you keep from sharing tips if that is the policy of the place where you work? Do you just look for another job? Umm, basically yes. Unless you have pull with the owner/manager to change the policy. I have not worked in a restaurant where I was not told of the tipping procedure before taking the job, so I'm not sure how a server could be 'surprised' with the procedure. I guess it could be changed while working there, but the impact would be strong if the servers are unhappy about the change. |
