Background: Last Friday, I went to buy gas, bought my usual amount, ten dollars worth. I always drive up to the self-serve pump, but on this day, an employee of the store pumped my gas. The Question: Should I have tipped him? I think I really should have, and thought for a while about the 2.00 or 20% I had with me...any advice? Like should I feel guilty about this, was 20% (my usual amount) enough, and if I see him again, should I tip 40% or 4.00 to make up for it?
Thanks. :-)

I think $2 is fine for gas pumping, unless it's a torrential downpour, REALLY cold etc... Really bad conditions call for a fivespot, IMHO.

(Admittedly, I live in PA where Full-Service gas stations are rare and I have gas pumped for me maybe three or four times PER YEAR, so I might be talking out of my butt, too.)

I would have tipped, but thats me. I had two front tires put on my car last week, I gave the kid who did the tires a five spot. He was supprised, and gracious.

Tricky: It was sunny and kind of hot out at the time. I think the 2 dollars would have been okay, and I really agree with you on the fiver for the severe conditions.
Extreme conditons, I think, should trigger more compensation, ie, weather like you described, or keeping the level of service high in spite of getting slammed at a restaurant.
Jammie: I didn't at the time, but I felt guilty about it later on. I think this is a case of "Now you know next time."
Thanks everyone who posted so far. :-)

justacustomer, I understood that the weather was good when you went to the gas station. I was only commenting that I think $2 is good for gasoline most of the time. :-)

What do people in NJ tip? It's some type of law in Jersey that you can't pump your own gas, EVER. What do those people get paid per hour? Does anyone tip them?

Nuvola~

It's against the law in Oregon to pump your own gas. I tip the attendant $2-5 depending on weather, cover, and what else he/she does. Here, they average $7.10 to $9/hr. (7.10 is our minimum wage for everyone, including tipped people)

Last week, the guy at the station by my house not only washed the windshield, but the rear & side windows too. He got a fiver. The guy this morning grunted at me, and spilled gas on my car. He got jack squat.

I live an hour away from New Jersey. I don't usually tip, but one time, the guy wiped my windshields, so I gave him a dollar.
